What should we keep in mind while buying syringes And Needles?
We all are recognized to a
syringe, having a needle attached and sticking out of a long plastic structure.
In our childhood, we are afraid of getting injected with that needle (syringe)
as compared to getting sick. Every child in his childhood is afraid of it and
most of the time for many people the illness flew away after seeing such a big
needle only.
Today we are going to talk
about the Syringe filter and Membrane filter and how to be selective while buying syringes
and needles.
Types of Syringes
Every product in this world
comes in different types and sizes so as the syringes are. There are several
types of syringes- Most can be disposed and many come with an additional needle
too. These are differentiated by the type and volume of the medicines they have
to store.
Syringe Selection
Selecting syringes is the main
job that has to be done carefully. These are selected based on the amount or
volume of medicines they have to store and the pressure flow. The marking on
the barrel is the amount to be collected measured in centimeters (cc) or
milliliters (ml).
1cc = 1ml
Large quantities of medications need large syringe sizes along with the lower pressure flow for a larger dimension. Their prices vary depending on their usage- one-time use has a low cost and 2 or several time usages have somewhat higher cost.
Tips of Syringe
- Luer lock- This one is the most popular type
of syringe, having the ability to attach and detach property. The needle
hub is attached and locks to the syringe tip with just a push and twist.
This twist locks the needle hub in its place on the syringe and hence
making it ready to use.
- Slip tip –
This is another very commonly used syringe. Pushing the needle hub onto
the syringe and the hold is by the friction due to which it is attached to
the syringe. No locking function like luer is involved here.
- Catheter tip –
These are useful for wound irrigation, flushing medical tubing. Medical
manufacturers design and produce these tips with a tapered end to allow
catheters to slip on and off of the tip.
- Permanently attached needle syringes-
This is the last type of syringe having the needle permanently attached to
the syringe. Hence it decreases the medication waste as they are easily
disposable. Tuberculin and insulin injections are popular under these
types of syringes.
Needle Selection
The steps to select the right
needle have 3 main considerations – gauge, length, and usage.
- Needle gauge –
Selection of needle gauge size and type is done by considering the skin
along with the thickness and depth of the injection. The higher the gauge
number it would be having the smallest the needle width. The most common
gauges are 26 and 27 adapting all the three types of injection-
intradermal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous.
- Needle length –
Commonly the needles vary in length from 3/8 inch to 3-1/2 inches. It
depends upon the location of the administration comprising of the needle
length required. The 1/2 and 5/8 inch needles are the two most common and
most used needle lengths that can be used for both intradermal and
subcutaneous injections.
Conclusion
While buying the needle, the most essential thing is to know which one you need for the desired medication. The needle gauge and length are also the factors to look for while buying the syringes and needles. Syringe filters and membrane filters are also the factors to look for based upon the type and capacity of the syringes.
